I met an old lady years ago, that I will never forget.
She was so sweet, so small, so fragile and so abused. I met her on the bus a few years back and yesterday, I couldn't stop thinking about something she had said to me. It's very important to leave people better than you found them, when you encounter someone, send love, laughter and kind words in their direction. You never know how far that will go. I'm sure she had no clue that years later I'd be telling her story.
So, here's what happened. I was on the bus, either going to or coming from work and this old lady sat by me and because I talk too much, we started talking. After telling me about her dancing days, she started to talk about her downfall. She told me that her son had locked her in a basement and wouldn't feed her. I honestly don't remember how long this disgusting behavior went on, but it was going on for quite some time. I sympathized with her. I wanted to find her son and slap the shit out of him. In all sadness and empathy I told her that I was sorry that happened to her. She smiled. She looked at me with the happiest eyes and said "Oh, don't be sorry. If that didn't happen, I wouldn't have lost all that weight and have all these fine young men approaching me." I smiled and we laughed together. I was honestly taken aback by her response, but it will stick with me forever.
Keepin' it Vertical: If she can take such a disgusting misfortune and find the silver lining, so can you! Today, I challenge you to find the silver lining in your situation and focus on that. Be the old lady today! Keep your spirit lifted, have a Vertical day!
